Inlays/Onlays

Inlays & Onlays Dental Treatments in Ottawa

Inlays and onlays are dental restorations similar to fillings. They are used to repair tooth decay and are made of gold or white ceramic material. The difference between the two is their location on the tooth. Onlays are used exclusively to rebuild the damaged cusps (corners) of the tooth, while inlays repair the flat tooth surface in between the cusps.

Inlay and onlay restorations are a little more time-consuming and labor-intensive than regular fillings; they require two separate dental visits. During the first appointment, the tooth (teeth) is prepared and impressions are taken. These impressions are sent to the dental lab where the actual gold or ceramic inlays or onlays are manufactured. During the second visit the restorations are permanently cemented. The potential inconvenience of two dental appointments is easily justified in light of the benefits received. Inlays and onlays have two important advantages over regular fillings: durability and better fit which means better protection against recurring decay.
