Preventive Dental Care Programs in Ottawa

Ongoing research in both dentistry and medicine seems to be uncovering and documenting the existence of an important relationship between oral health and general health and well-being. Poor oral health has been linked to certain systemic disease such as diabetes, respiratory, heart and other ailments. Given what we know, prevention is the only responsible approach.

Our Preventative Care Program starts with a very thorough dental examination and evaluation. All findings are clearly explained and recommendations are made how to proceed forward. In the end, together with you, the patient, we choose a preventative care program that best suits your particular situation and your specific needs.

Here are brief descriptions of the 4 basic categories of our Preventative Care program:

1) Excellent Oral Health

  • Perfectly healthy gums and teeth
  • Exceptional oral hygiene habits
  • Recalls every 9 months: cleaning with a hygienist; checkup with a dentist

2) Good Oral Health

  • Gums and teeth in good stable condition
  • Regular oral hygiene at home
  • Recalls with a hygienist every 6 months
  • Checkup with a dentist every 12 months

3) Mild Periodontal Disease

  • Evidence of mild gingivitis (inflammation and bleeding of the gums)
  • More frequent cleaning by a hygienist required to remove plaque and bacteria
  • Additional oral hygiene instructions and supervision
  • Recalls scheduled every 3 months until periodontal disease is eradicated; 6 month visits can resume thereafter

4) Severe Periodontal Disease

  • Significant inflammation and bleeding of the gums
  • Pain, discomfort and other symptoms
  • First few appointments scheduled closely together; goal is to initiate the treatment and supervise the recovery
  • Additional oral hygiene instructions and frequent supervision
  • 3 month interval can resume when periodontal disease is eliminated
